Plymouth defeat final straw for Thompson

Steve Thompson has said he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season

Manchester City slumped to their 4th league defeat of the season tonight losing 3-2 to lowly Plymouth Argyle and immediately after the game City boss Steve Thompson confirmed that he will quit the club at the end of the current season. The defeat has seen City slip to 5th in division 3 five points adrift of current league leaders Northampton Town.

A lacklustre performance from City saw them 2-0 behind thanks to goals from David Nugent and Jamie Vardy early in the second half but City rallied and managed to draw the game back level courtesy of goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria but just as it looked as if both teams would settle for a point Plymouth grabbed what proved to be the winner 10 minutes from time thanks to Welsh midfielder Andy King.

The shock result was much needed for James Burrow's side who climb away from relegation while pre season title favourites City made the long trip back to the Etihad having dropped two places to 5th in the division.

A visibly angry Steve Thompson broke the news of his intentions to resign when speaking after the game.

"I do not want to sound like i am being disrespectful to James and his Plymouth team when i say this but that was to be frank one of the most embarrassing performances and results i have been involved in, tonight was the kind of game you simply must be winning if you want to gain promotion and again we have been found wanting.

we are paying players ridiculous wages at this club and they churn out performances like tonight well i am not having it. I have worked with players who would sweat blood for the badge on their shirt and this lot at the minute are a disgrace they do not represent what i instill in my players and for that i have decided at the end of the season i will be resigning from this club. I will not be making any further comment on my decision until i have spoken to the board"
